The Gospel clarified
Thursday, November 20th, 2008I figured I would slip in a quick post about what’s up lately.
First, I want to clarify to Roz what I had posted about the Gospel a couple posts back. I said “This is the message of the Gospel: I am loved.” I guess I should apologize by stating that that is not the “complete” gospel. It is the good news that I have been needing to hear lately, however. Lately I have been struggling with the notion that I need to be “less sinful” or “more productive” in order for God to love me more. However, God loves me in the state I am in, and gave his Son up for me so that I do not need to remain in this state.
And the good news is that I don’t need to do anything to gain this love, it comes simply to receiving that gift by faith alone.
I hope that clarifies.
But to open up another bag of worms — I’m sure many have thoughts on this — does salvation by grace alone through faith necessarily need to require complete repentance? If it requires repentance, does that mean that part of salvation is of our own actions (that is, our action of repentance)? In other words, if it is grace + repentance, then could a person not boast in their own repentance as the grounds for their salvation?
It is my opinion right now that to receive Christ properly, we are to turn from ourselves and to God as he is our only solution to our brokenness and sin. We need to state (as an attitude of our hearts) that we surrender to his control and plan.
The thought that runs through my mind is the image of someone saying to God “Ok God, I’ve repented and turned from my sin, now will you save me?”
PS. For my replies to the comments to this post I will reply in the comments. Unless there is some way for you to be notified of my replies, you will have to check back, I guess.
