The effect of photo, tv, and internet

Monday, July 20th, 2009

I’ve been wanting to read this book called “Flickering Pixels” How Technology Shapes Your Faith, but haven’t been able to get a copy.  Here’s an interesting interview:

Virtually everywhere we turn today, technology is reshaping the ways we relate and communicate. We go online. We download. We chat and Twitter and hang out on Facebook until our eyes hurt and our brains burst. And more than ever before, the options regarding which movies, music, TV shows and video games we might consume are virtually unlimited.

But how do these media actually influence us? I recently talked with author and Mennonite pastor Shane Hipps, someone who’s thought deeply about that question. His new book, Flickering Pixels: How Technology Shapes Your Faith, describes the profound ways our electronic culture molds the way we see the world … and each other.

A reminder

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Thanks for the reminder to pray before writing and preparing my talk.  It didn’t become clear that I needed to do this until I saw a dude praying in front of me right after he sat down here in The Coffee House working area.  I don’t know why he’s praying, but I know that even though Keith told me to pray when I asked him how to find the perseverance to continue evaluating this passage, in my heart I refused and I believed in my heart that I could do this on my own.

Give me wisdom, give me grace, and give me adeptness.  I’ll never be able to prepare a message that changes people’s hearts unless I do it under your power.  Let your words be my words, let none of my own worldly wisdom make its way into what I’m working on.

Rest day

Monday, July 13th, 2009

After getting a bit frustrated at the churches that I’ve attended in Fort Collins thus far, I sought out a church that would offer some biblical expository preaching.  Faith Evangelical Free Church on Shields Ave was what I ended up settling on.  I thought it was going to be 30-40 minutes by bike away so I left around 9:50 am to make it for 10:30. It ended up being 20 minutes, not too shabby.

The service was better than the other two weekends.  The pastor actually had a Fallen Condition Focus (something that shows that we need Christ) and a Redemptive Solution somewhat.  The passage he preached on, Acts 13-14, is pretty hard to preach towards non-Christians, but there could have been more of that.

After church I went to Panera Bread with Sean and Nancy and their 2 kids.  That place is going up in my mind more and more.  Pretty good service at this location.  They actually put the butter and cups out at the counter.  They didn’t use little vibrating pagers, but instead they called you by name when your food was ready.

I spent the rest of the afternoon biking all around town.  I stopped at REI (sweetness) and picked up a midweight fleece and some Tech Wash and TX-Direct to wash my jackets.  I also now have a membership with REI which means I can now buy from their online store too….. uh oh (sheepish smile).

The bike riding took me to a city park and past a couple golf courses (including the one where we went last week).  I stopped in at the south location of Lee’s Cyclery and chatted with Peter about biking and stuff.  This dude races year-round.  I watched some of the Tour de France on the TV for about 45 mins and caught up a bit with my Tour news.  Although during the broadcast there wasn’t really even a mention of Lance.  Graham Watson’s blog helped me catch up a bit on the happs though.

After going to a bike shop and watching the Tour, somehow I ended up at CSU where there were Criterium races happening at the CSU loop.  It was a set of races for all ages, ranging from little kids to licensed track racers.  Dang.  If I had known that it was happening, I would have put $5 in and demo’d a bike for the day to participate in the race.  Good to know for the future.

But yeah, little kids were racing against each other, and then they gradually moved to even CSU racing team riders.  There was one race for messengers and other single speeds.  It was a neat thing to see after riding all day and watching some of the professional racing of the Tour.

Here goes the rest of the week and the final stretch of courses.  I think I’m getting a bit tired from the classroom learning, showing just how long it has been since I’ve been out of school now (which doesn’t feel long still).
